Apprentices Act — engaging apprentices

Establishments with 30 or more workers must engage apprentices at 2.5% to 15% of their workforce, including contract workers, and pay at least the prescribed stipend.

  • Band: an employer with a workforce of 30 or more must engage apprentices within the band of 2.5% to 15% of the total workforce, including contract workers. Smaller establishments (4 to 29) may engage them voluntarily.
  • Stipend: not less than the minimum prescribed under the Apprenticeship Rules, by qualification. The Government shares part of it under the NAPS / NATS schemes.
  • Portal: register on the apprenticeship portal, publish openings, sign contracts online, and file returns online.
  • Not workers: apprentices are trainees, not workers. Labour laws on employment do not apply to them, but they get safety, health and welfare during training.
