Women at work — night shifts and equal opportunity

Women may work in all establishments, including at night, with their consent and with the safety, holiday and transport conditions the appropriate government sets.

  • Night work (OSH Code s. 43): a woman may work before 6 am and after 7 pm with her consent. The employer must meet the conditions on safety, holidays, working hours and transport.
  • Hazardous operations: where the government finds work dangerous to women's health, it may require adequate safeguards before women are employed.
  • Equal opportunity: no discrimination in recruitment, or in conditions of employment, for the same or similar work (Code on Wages s. 3).
  • Maternity, creche and POSH: see the separate notes.
