Social security for unorganised workers

Unorganised workers, including home-based and self-employed workers, register on e-Shram and get access to Central and State schemes for life and disability cover, health, old age and more.

Chapter IX of the Code on Social Security covers unorganised workers.

  • The Central Government frames schemes for life and disability cover, health and maternity benefits, old-age protection, and education.
  • State Governments frame schemes for provident fund, employment injury, housing, education, skill upgradation and old-age homes.
  • Registration: every unorganised worker aged 16 and above can register on the Central portal (e-Shram) with Aadhaar and get a Universal Account Number (UAN). Registration is free.
  • National and State Social Security Boards advise on the schemes. A helpline and facilitation centres help workers apply.

See the Government schemes page for the main schemes and an eligibility finder. Labour Law Guru can guide you to the right registration.
