Beedi and cigar workers

Beedi and cigar work, including work given out to home-workers, needs a licence and records. Workers get welfare through the Labour Welfare Organisation.

  • Coverage: industrial premises making beedi or cigars, and contractors or employers who give out the work to home-workers.
  • Duties:
    • a licence for the premises;
    • registers of workers and of home-workers;
    • wage books given to workers;
    • welfare facilities;
    • no work by children.
  • Welfare: the Labour Welfare Organisation of the Ministry of Labour runs schemes for beedi workers and their families, such as health care, scholarships for children and housing assistance. Workers get an identity card to use them.
