Plantation workers

Plantations above the size and worker threshold in the OSH Code must provide housing, medical facilities, creches, recreation and education for workers' children.

The OSH Code covers plantations of tea, coffee, rubber, cinchona, cardamom, oil palm and other notified crops. It applies where the area and the number of workers cross the threshold in the definition (5 hectares or more and the prescribed number of workers). A State may extend it to smaller plantations.

Employers must provide:

  • housing and medical facilities;
  • drinking water and toilets;
  • a creche and a canteen as notified;
  • recreation;
  • education facilities for workers' children;
  • protective clothing for work with chemicals.

Workers get annual leave, maternity benefit and other benefits under the Codes. The State rules lay down the detailed standards.
