Workers in mines

Mines are covered by the OSH Code and the mines regulations administered by DGMS. They have stricter limits on hours, underground work and medical examination.

  • Hours: no worker in a mine works more than 8 hours in a day or 48 hours in a week. Spread-over and underground limits are set in the Rules.
  • Underground work: no one below 18 may work in any part of a mine. Women may be employed underground with safety conditions and consent, as allowed by the Rules.
  • Safety:
    • managers and competent persons;
    • a safety committee meeting every month;
    • initial and periodical medical examinations;
    • accident reporting to DGMS.
  • Welfare: canteen, rest shelters, creche and first-aid facilities as prescribed.
